Dame Emma Thompson gave us a delicious villain in Disney's Cruella. Now she's really bringing the wicked again in Matilda the Musical.
The first trailer for the upcoming movie musical introduces us to Thompson's Miss Trunchbull, the formidable headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Toward the end, we see a glimpse of the famous scene from Roald Dahl's book where Miss Trunchbull really gets into the swing of teaching the title character (Alisha Weir) a lesson.
Matilda the Musical co-stars Lashana Lynch as Matilda's sympathetic teacher Miss Honey, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as her parents, and Sindhu Vee as Matilda's encouraging local librarian Mrs. Phelps. It's directed by Matthew Warchus, who won a Tony Award for directing the hugely popular Broadway musical it's based on.
It's the second film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda following the 1996 version starring Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito. In the U.K., Matilda the Musical opens in theaters on December 2. In the U.S., it premieres on Netflix the same day.
