Hugh Laurie is probably best known in the U.S. for his title role in the medical drama House. And before that, he was a longstanding comedic actor in the U.K., starring in classics like Blackadder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Now, he’s going… Sci-Fi.
The first season of Avenue 5 kicked off in 2020 with Laurie starring as spaceship captain Ryan Clark. He returns to reprise his role, initially described as the "charming and in-control American captain of the Avenue 5." It’s not just Laurie who is back, creator Armando Iannucci has written the eight-part season.
The series is set forty years in the future, and Clark is the captain of a luxury spaceship, catering to wealthy passengers. But, when the ship goes off course, the cruise goes from LOL to S.O.S.
If you need some catching up on season one, here’s a peek at the trailer:

Here's what we can expect going into the second season, according to the official synopsis: “Picking up five months after failing to reroute the vessel, Season 2 follows the crew – including fiery engineer Billie, unpredictable head of customer relations Matt, and faithful right-hand Iris – as they struggle to lead, calm, control, and, if need be, hide from increasingly unruly passengers. On earth, they’re lauded as heroes, and in space, everyone can hear them scream.”
The trip went from eight weeks to eight years. That is quite a jump. Let’s just say, the passengers do not take the news well:

It seems Clark may be responsible for this miscalculation and now he’s responsible for finding a fix.
You can look for the new season of Avenue 5 over at HBO Max and HBO, premiering this week (October 10).
