All aboard! The first trailer for The Railway Children Return has been released, offering a first glimpse of Jenny Agutter reprising her iconic role as Bobbie Waterbury.
Agutter co-starred opposite Bernard Cribbins in the original 1970 movie The Railway Children, which was adapted from a beloved children’s book by Edith Nesbit. It centers on a London family who relocate to a house by the railway in Yorkshire after their father is falsely accused of being a spy.
Agutter, who now stars in the BBC/PBS drama series Call the Midwife, plays a grown-up version of the same character in The Railway Children Return. This time around, the story follows a group of schoolchildren from the inner cities who are evacuated to the safety of the countryside during the Second World War.
She is joined in the sequel by Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, and a company of young actors led by KJ Aikens, Beau Gadsden, Eden Hamilton, Austin Haynes, and Zac Cudby.
Judging from the trailer, which naturally features an old-timey steam train, the sequel aims to evoke the warmly nostalgic tone of the original movie. It’s expected to arrive in theaters in 2022.
