WATCH: John David Washington and Robert Pattinson in Trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet'

Director Christopher Nolan is known for keeping details about his movies tightly under wraps, but the first trailer for his latest film Tenet does provide a few clues.

John David Washington (Ballers, BlacKkKlansman) takes center-stage in the trailer, and seems to be playing some kind of secret agent who's recruited into something called "the afterlife," presumably because he's dead. His mission appears to be preventing World War III, and it probably involves time travel in some form.

Martin Donovan (Weeds) seems to be playing his handler, and we also catch glimpses of unnamed characters played by Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Sir Michael Caine, and Harry Potter's Clémence Poésy.

Nolan, whose previous movies include Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight Batman trilogy, has called Tenet the "most ambitious" film of his career.

“We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way. [Producer] Emma Thomas and I have put together a lot of large-scale productions, but this is certainly the biggest in terms of international reach. We shot in seven countries, all over the place, with a massive cast and huge set pieces. There’s no question, it’s the most ambitious film we’ve made.”

The movie's cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Yesterday actor Himesh Patel, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel's Denzil Smith, and it opens in theaters July 17. Bring it on.
