WATCH: Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley Star in Creepy 'The Midwich Cuckoos' Trailer

The first trailer for the eagerly-anticipated British sci-fi series The Midwich Cuckoos is here, and it's a suitably spooky affair.
Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley star in the eight-part adaptation of John Wyndham's classic 1957 novel, which was previously adapted into the 1965 movie Village of the Damned and its 1995 remake.
The story takes place in the fictional English village of Midwich, a seemingly sleepy community that experiences an unexplained blackout on an otherwise ordinary summer's day. Once the blackout lifts, it becomes apparent that every woman of child-bearing age in the village has suddenly and inexplicably fallen pregnant.
Hawes plays Dr. Susannah Zellaby, a psychotherapist trying to help the traumatized community while grappling with the news that her own daughter is suddenly pregnant. Beesley co-stars as DCI Paul Kirby, a local police officer desperately trying to maintain order in the village. The Midwich Cuckoos has been written and created by David Farr, who previously wrote AMC's acclaimed John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager
When the series was announced last year, he said in a release: "I first read The Midwich Cuckoos when I was twelve. I was living in a small town in 1980s Britain. Everything about the book rang true to me and terrified me. An invasion of a small community by a hostile and ruthless force. Apparently innocent children as a force of huge malevolent power. It got under my skin.
“As I've grown older, the story has never ceased to exert a grip," he added. "The idea that we may birth our own destruction is so simple and frightening. That as a mother or a father, the being we love most in the world may turn on us. It's the stuff of nightmares."
The Midwich Cuckoos is due to air in the U.K. later this year on Sky. Watch this space for details of its U.S. release.
