The first teaser for Steven Knight's new adaptation of Great Expectations is here, giving us a glimpse of Olivia Colman's Miss Havisham.
"What a prized creature we have fished from the river," she says menacingly as she sets eyes on young Pip, played by Tom Sweet. Miss Havisham, a wealthy older woman left traumatized after being jilted at the altar in her youth, has previously been played on screen by actresses including Anne Bancroft, Helena Bonham Carter, Gillian Anderson, and Charlotte Rampling.
So, Colman is definitely following in some illustrious footsteps in this BBC/FX adaptation written by and executive produced by Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders.
Fionn Whitehead plays the older Pip, an orphan who accesses better opportunities – and encounters great expectations – after crossing paths with Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella (Line of Duty's Shalom Brune-Franklin).
The six-part Charles Dickens adaptation also features Killing Eve's Owen McDonnell, The Ipcress File's Ashley Thomas, The Salisbury Poisonings' Johnny Harris, and Call the Midwife's Hayley Squires. Knight has form when it comes to adapting Dickens; he also wrote the BBC and FX's 2019 adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
His fellow executive producers here, and in the previous Dickens miniseries, include Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott. Great Expectations is expected to premiere later this year.
