Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe both star as lighthouse keepers in director Robert Eggers' black-and-white film The Lighthouse. The film screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival, with the official trailer releasing today (July 30).

The fantasy-horror flick is set in 1890s, Nova Scotia. The men are assigned to a remote and mysterious island in New England. Dafoe takes on the role of the more senior lighthouse keeper, Thomas Wake. He's put in charge of training Ephraim Winslow (Pattinson) in the art of lighthouse keeping.

While it may not be a part of the film's official synopsis, Deadline suggests the two "drive each other to madness."

The script was written by Eggers (The Witch) and his brother Max. This is the first time the two are collaborating on a feature film. It was actually shot using 35mm film and framed in a 1.19:1 aspect ratio (more square than what we're used to seeing on-screen).

The film was named best movie at Cannes’ Critics Week and Directors’ Fortnight by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
