Following a teaser last week, the full trailer for the third and final season of Happy Valley is here. And though retirement is approaching for Sarah Lancashire's Sergeant Catherine Cawood, she won't be bowing out quietly.
That's because her nemesis – James Norton's Tommy Lee Royce, a murderer and sex offender who is the father of Catherine's grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) – is very much back on the scene. Thankfully, she still has emotional support from sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran), a recovering addict who always has her back.
The trailer shows Catherine dealing with a new, high-stakes case as well as a little disrespect from Ryan, who questions whether she is "a bit old" to be using her police officer's taser. It also shows Catherine with a badly bloodied nose, something we'd previously seen in first-look images released by AMC+.
AMC+'s plot synopsis teases: "When Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, it sparks a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce.
"Her grandson Ryan is now 16 and still living with Catherine, but he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father. Still battling the seemingly never-ending problem of drugs in the valley and those who supply them, Catherine is on the cusp of retirement."
Written and created by Sally Wainwright, Happy Valley debuted in 2014 and returned for a second season in 2016. Season three is a co-production between AMC+ and the BBC that will premiere in the U.S. on AMC+ and Acorn TV at a date yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, you can binge-watch the first two seasons on AMC+.
