The trailer for season two of Gentleman Jack is here, giving us a fresh glimpse of Suranne Jones' formidable lead character, Anne Lister.
Written by Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright, the series is based on the coded diaries of Lister, a British queer pioneer. Born into a Yorkshire landowning family at the end of the 19th century, Lister defied social conventions of the time by conducting romantic relationships with women and claiming space in the male-dominated industrial world.
According to a BBC media release, season two begins in 1834 and sees Lister and partner Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) setting up home together "as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple."
"Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with [local town] Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous," the release teases.
The trailer also includes a glimpse of a new character played by recent BAFTA award winner Joanna Scanlan. She portrays Isabella "Tib" Norcliffe, who is described as an "outrageous" former lover of Lister's. We can't wait to meet her, quite frankly.
Season two of Gentleman Jack will premiere in the U.K. April 10 on BBC One. In the U.S., it will air on HBO at a later date.
