James McAvoy is set to star in the Stephen King adaptation, IT Chapter Two, premiering this week (September 6). While the killer clown thriller scares us to bits, it did get us thinking, where else can we find McAvoy? As well as his fellow Scottish acting peers, who have been regularly popping up on the blog of late, like Gerard Butler, David Tennant, Peter Capaldi... just to name a few.

Let's take a peek, where are all the Scots!?

1. James McAvoy

If horror isn't your thing, you can also look for McAvoy in the forthcoming His Dark Materials TV series as Lord Asriel, based on Philip Pullman's novels. The story is based in an alternate universe and follows a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). She’s in search of her friend Roger (Ben Walker), who has gone missing. She heads to the far North to find him. Also, McAvoy was recently spotted in this year's Dark Phoenix, reprising his role as Professor X, leader of mutants. If you'd like to go back to one of his earlier roles, McAvoy sports his native accent in the original Shameless (2004-2005) as Steve McBride, Fiona's car-stealing boyfriend.

2. Peter Capaldi

If you're a regular reader of Anglophenia, and we know you are, then you may have seen the recent announcement of Capaldi joining The Suicide Squad. There are no details on what role he's playing, but it's definitely got our attention. And what else does he have on the docket? Earlier this year he starred in the music video for "Someone You Love," which you can watch in the above player (warning: it's kind of a tearjerker). Also, he's completed filming on the Charles Dickens adaptation The Personal History of David Copperfield, starring as Mr. Micawber. You can look for the semi-biographical film in theaters on January 10, 2020. And, of course, you can always catch up with him as The Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who (2013-2017). 

3. Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan, also a DW alum, is all sorts of busy. Earlier this summer, Gillan starred in All Creatures Here Below, portraying a desperate woman who steals a baby. She recently starred in Avengers: Endgame, reprising her role as Nebula. Just last year she wrote, directed and starred in the feature-length Glasgow-based film The Party’s Just Beginning. Being a native of Scotland, this project was close to heart. It follows a young woman struggling with the loss of her best friend, who committed suicide the year prior.

We can also look for her in the 2019 Jumanji sequel (December 13), opposite Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. The project that really has our attention is 2020’s Gunpowder Milkshake, which is set to be a female killer-for-hire film. It may be just us, but that appears to be the “in” genre. Our fingers are crossed she’s to portray the assassin, but whatever role she takes on, we trust her to kill it.

4. Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler is on top of the world! Well, his film Angel Has Fallen is at the top of the box office these days. But, he cannot rest on his laurels or latest action flick. What's up next? He's completed filming on Greenland, a survival film about a family fighting for their lives during a natural disaster. We can also look for him in the Den of Thieves sequel, which was confirmed when the original came out in 2018. He returns to reprise his role as "Big Nick" O'Brien, team leader of an elite unit of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, with the cat and mouse chase moving to Europe. The pressure is on to follow-up his current success... we believe in him!

5. Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart is currently filming the Star Trek: Picard TV series. Yep, that's right, it's a spinoff revolving around his character Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The storyline is under wraps, but it appears to be the next chapter of his life, following Star Trek: Next Generation, versus a prequel. You can look for the 10-episode series in 2020. You can also listen for him in the reboot of Charlie's Angels, premiering on November 15, lending his voice to the character of Bosley. He's also lent his voice to the long-running animated series American Dad (2005-2019) and Family Guy (2005-2018). As well, he made the role of Professor X famous in the original X-Men franchise (2000-2009), which you can always go back to for a catch-up.

6. Kelly Macdonald

One of Kelly Macdonald's first on-screen role was in 1996's Trainspotting, opposite Ewan McGregor. She played schoolgirl Diane. More recently, we saw her in the breakout hit Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014) as Margaret Thompson, girlfriend to Nucky (Steve Buscemi). You can look for her in the BritBox original miniseries The Victim, premiering on September 6. She stars as a grieving mother, who thinks she knows who her son's killer is. When she allegedly identifies the man, putting his name and address online, she then becomes an accused criminal. The series also stars John Hannah (Sliding Doors). We can also look for her in the mystery series Giri/Haji (Duty/Shame) as a woman named Sarah. The series comes from AMC's Humans creator Joe Barton, revolving around a Tokyo-based detective who travels to London to look for his brother. Macdonald's character helps the detective his search.

7. Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming recently starred in the crime series Instinct as Dr. Dylan Reinhart. He plays a former CIA operative, who has resigned for a more quiet life as a professor and writer. He's pulled back into the game, as his expert skills are needed to search for a serial killer. He's also signed on for the TV movie Going Back, set in his native Scotland. It revolves around a 30-year-old man who pretends to be a teenager, setting off a lot of red flags. Pressing the rewind button, you can go back to BBC America's 2017's Queers, made-up of eight short films. Cumming, along with Ben Whishaw, Rebecca Front, Russell Tovey, Gemma Whelan, Ian Gelder, Kadiff Kirwan and Fionn Whitehead, performed a monologue in response to the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act — which partially decriminalized homosexual acts between men in the U.K.

8. Ewan McGregor

We mentioned 1996's Trainspotting earlier in this roundup, which was Ewan McGregor's breakout role (and what a breakout it was). McGregor returned for a very belated sequel, reuniting with director Danny Boyle for T2 in 2017. We can look for him next in the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, coming out on November 8. It's the follow-up to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980) and it looks... utterly terrifying. McGregor plays Dan Torrance, young Danny from the original who is now grown up. He's developed a drinking problem, using alcohol to block his psychic abilities. But, when he gets a job at a hospice center, he embraces his gift and uses it to help people face death, hence earning his name, "Doctor Sleep." He's also signed on for the 2020 drama The Birthday Cake. Don't let titles fool you... it's a mafia movie. And, he recently confirmed that he will be returning to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the forthcoming Disney Plus series.

9. Rose Leslie

If you're missing Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones, you can see her each week, right here on American TV. She stars in the legal drama The Good Fight (2017-2019) as Maia Rindell. The series is a spinoff of The Good Wife, revolving around a young attorney (Leslie) whose reputation is ruined when it comes out her father is guilty of a Ponzi scheme. And her mentor (Christine Baranski) loses all of her money, as she was an investor. The two join a new firm and work to build back what they once had. It's a little weird to see Leslie dressed in a suit, working in an office, versus fighting off White Walkers with her lover Jon Snow (real-life hubby Kit Harington).

10. David Tennant

And, finally, David Tennant who is an Anglo mainstay, can currently be seen in Neil Gaiman's Good Omens, opposite Michael Sheen. Tennant plays the Demon Crowley, with Sheen taking on the role of the Angel Aziraphale. The two put their differences aside to save the world. He's set to reunite with Doctor Who co-star Catherine Tate for a comedy series called Americons. They're set to play a British couple who pack up and move to the U.S. Tate is pulling double duty and writing the series. We can also look for him in the forthcoming series Deadwater Fell. He plays a man named Tom, whose wife and three children are found dead after a house fire. But, somehow Tom survived. As the story unravels, it looks like something much darker is amiss.

This is a ton of stellar work all in one place, and, stating the obvious, the accent doesn't hurt.
