Peter Capaldi (The Thick of It) stepped into the role of the Doctor in 2013, taking over for Matt Smith. He was excited to join the Whoniverse, saying at the time, "Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started."

We met the Twelfth Doctor for the first time in the "Day of the Doctor" 50th anniversary special, kicking off his three-season run as the TARDIS traveling Time Lord. Capaldi is always on our radar, but let's take a minute to put a spotlight on him and some of his Doctor Who castmates.

The latest roles might be on your watch list already, with others being completely new to you. Here’s a roundup of the goings-on all in one place, to make it easier for you to catch up with some of your DW favorites:

1.  Peter Capaldi

Before taking his leave, Capaldi guest-starred in the Doctor Who spinoff series Class in 2017. He signed off as the Doctor for the last time in the episode "Twice Upon a Time," with Jodie Whittaker making her debut as the Thirteenth Doctor.

His first post-DW role was in 2017's Paddington 2, where he played the role of the baddie Mr. Curry. He also starred in 2018's Christopher Robin, providing the voice for Rabbit. The movie starred Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Robin who reconnects with his childhood friends, Winnie the Pooh and pals. Also in 2018, Capaldi starred in Watership Down, a sort of Game of Thrones-like story, but a battle of rabbits. He voiced a seagull by the name of Kehaar. Capaldi joined an all-star cast made up of James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, John Boyega, Ben Kingsley, Olivia Colman, Gemma Arterton and Tom Wilkinson. He's completed filming on the 2019 drama The Personal History of David Copperfield, based on the autobiographical novel by Charles Dickens. The film adaptation will also star Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie, Hugh Laurie, Ben Whishaw and Dev Patel in the title role. Capaldi will play Mr. Micawber, Copperfield's landlord.

2. Jenna Coleman

Jenna Coleman stepped in as the Eleventh Doctor's companion when Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) made her exit. The new companion, Clara, also witnessed him regenerate into his Twelfth incarnation.

While filming DW, Coleman found time to work on other projects during hiatus, like the 2013 miniseries Death Comes to Pemberley as Lydia Wickman. The series picks up  six years after the ending of Pride and Prejudice, written by P.D. James in homage to Jane Austen. She also starred in the 2016 feature film, Me Before You, opposite fellow Anglo regulars Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin.

Her first post-DW role was in the 2018 miniseries The Cry, portraying an inconsolable mother, whose baby disappeared without a trace. From there, she portrayed Queen Victoria in the dramatic series Victoria (2016-present). We can also look for Coleman in the National Theatre Live performance of Arthur Miller's All My Sons as Ann Deever, opposite Sally Field and Colin Morgan. She's joined season five of the comedy-horror TV series Inside No. 9. She'll play a young woman named Beattie.

3. Pearl Mackie 

In 2016, Pearl Mackie joined the Doctor as companion Bill Potts. Her first appearance was in the episode "Friend from the Future." She stayed with him through 2017, with her last episode being the same as the Twelfth Doctor's last appearance in "Twice Upon a Time."

You may have spotted Mackie in the 2017 miniseries Little Pieces of Gold as Trixie Jones. In 2018, she starred in the short film Proposal. Also in 2018, she starred in The Crystal Maze TV series and Figures of Speech miniseries. Her 2019 has been jam-packed with roles in The Conception of Terror miniseries and Urban Myths TV series. We can also look for her in Forest 404 and Adulting, both TV Series, later this year. She's completed filming on the short film Origami, with a release date still to come.

4. Alex Kingston 

Alex Kingston's role as companion River Song is a little more complicated than the two featured above. She started off as a companion, turned into a bit of a love interest, even though the Doctor doesn't have a sex drive, and then his wife (don't even get us started on who her parents are!!). She is a time traveler herself, so the storylines aren't necessarily chronological. She interacted with all three incarnations of the Doctor: Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth (hmm, will she be involved with the Thirteenth Doctor at some point?).

We don't know the future of River Song, but in regards to Kingston, in 2013 she joined the superhero series Arrow as Dinah Lance, starring in the series through 2016. She popped up in the 2016 Gilmore Girls reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life as Naomi Shropshire. Kingston recently starred in the AMC/BBC America simulcast of the eight-part series A Discovery of Witches as Sarah Bishop, auntie to Diana (Teresa Palmer) (available for streaming via Sundance Now and Shudder). You can currently look for her in the mystery series The Widow, starring opposite Kate Beckinsale via Amazon Prime.

5. Matt Lucas

Matt Lucas joined DW in 2015 as Nardole, a companion to River Song. He started off with two one-off roles in the episodes "The Husbands of River Song" and "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." But in 2017, he became a series regular, starring in 12 back-to-back episodes.

Before entering the Whoniverse, Lucas was famous for his sketch comedy series Little Britain (2003-2006), which he created with his writing partner and co-star David Walliams. Since then we saw Lucas in the 2011 breakout hit Bridesmaids as Kristen Wiig's slightly creepy roommate. More recently, in 2018 he lent his voice to the animated film Sherlock Gnomes as Kenny. You may have recognized his voice in 2019's The Queen's Corgi as Charlie. Also in 2019, he starred in the feature film Polar, opposite Mads Mikkelsen. He's currently filming Fairy Tale Forest, a TV adaptation of the Grimm Brothers' story Jorinde and Joringel. Fairy Tale Forest also stars Mel Brooks and Jane Lynch.

6. Samuel Anderson 

In 2014, Samuel Anderson took on the role of Danny Pink. Pink was a sergeant in the British Army, resigning after an accident. He turned his sights to teaching, where he befriend Clara Oswald. Anderson's first appearance was in "Into the Dalek," with his final episode being "Last Christmas."

You may have also spotted Anderson in the crime series DCI Banks, starring as DC Vince Grady from 2011-2016. He also starred in the 2017 series Loaded as Leon. You can look for him in the forthcoming sci-fi series Another Life, opposite Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff.

7. Michelle Gomez 

And, finally, Michelle Gomez starred as the oh-so-intense Missy. She is an incarnation of the renegade alien Time Lord the Master. Let's just say, while both the Master and the Doctor are Time Lords, they are not on the same wave-length. Gomez made her introduction to DW in 2014's "Deep Breath" and made her exit with 2017's "The Doctor Falls."

Gomez joined the superhero Gotham series, starring as The Lady from 2015-2016. She takes on a lead role in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2019) as a possessed teacher, who goes by Mary Wardwell. You can also go back and watch some of Gomez' earlier work, like the TV series Psychobitches (2013-2014) and Bad Education (2012-2013), also starring funnyman Jack Whitehall.
