Where to Look for Julia Garner: From ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ to ‘Inventing Anna’

The true crime series Inventing Anna premiered on February 11, and it seems people are really talking about it. The story follows Anna Delvey, who conned New Yorkers into believing she was a German heiress, gaining their friendship and their trust... ultimately swindling them out of their money.
Julia Garner, who you may know from Ozark (2017-2022), takes on the title role.
It makes us want to do some digging, and see where else we can find this fine actress:
1. Martha Marcy May Marlene
In 2011, Garner made her feature film debut, starring in Martha Marcy May Marlene, opposite Elizabeth Olsen. Olsen portrays a young woman, who has escaped from a cult. She’s able to reconnect with her sister, finding a place to stay. Garner portrays a girl named Sarah, who is also a cult member.
2. Electrick Children
In 2012, Garner stepped into the lead role, starring in Electrick Children. She portrays a teenager named Rachel, who learns she’s pregnant. She believes it’s due to listening to music. Rachel leaves her Mormon community, traveling from Utah to Las Vegas in search of a new life. And the man singing the song.
3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Also in 2012, Garner popped up in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, opposite Anglo favorite Emma Watson. Based on the 1999 novel, we meet Charlie (Logan Lerman), who is about to enter his freshman year of high school. He’s trying to find his way and make friends. Garner portrays a classmate.
4. Sin City – A Dame to Kill For
We also saw Garner in the 2014 Sin City sequel, starring as a waitress named Marcie. She crosses paths with a gambler (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is new to town. After he wins big, he takes her along to an underground poker game, thinking she’ll be good luck. Possibly good for him, but what about her?
5. The Americans
The Americans kicked off in 2013, with Garner joining the third season in 2015. She starred in ten episodes of the espionage series, portraying a teenager named Kimberley Breland. She gets uncomfortably close to Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), who is not only an undercover KGB agent but also married.
6. Girls
Garner made a guest appearance in the series Girls. She starred in the 2016 episode “The Panic in Central Park,” as "Charlie’s Roommate." While her character may not have had a name, her role was substantial enough to make her on-screen presence known.
7. Maniac
In 2018, Garner went the sci-fi route, starring in the series Maniac, opposite Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Stone and Hill star as Annie and Owen, who participate in a drug study, that links their minds. Garner takes on the role of Annie’s sister, who goes by Ellie. Ellie helps her sister through shifting realities.
8. Dirty John
Circling back to the true crime genre, we saw Garner in Dirty John (2018-2019). The story revolves around a con artist (Eric Bana), who poses as a doctor. He charms an unsuspecting woman (Connie Britton) into thinking he’s something he’s not. Garner stars as her younger daughter, who suspects something is up.
9. Modern Love
In 2018, Garner starred in the anthology series Modern Love. She portrays a young woman named Maddy. She says she doesn’t have a dad and she’s used to it, rarely thinking about his absence. At least, that's until she starts crushing on an older coworker (Shea Whigham), describing him as “dad porn.”
10. Ozark
Garner made her mark with the series Ozark (2017-2022) as Ruth Langmore. The series revolves around a married couple, who move from Chicago to the Mississippi Ozarks under the guise of starting a new life. But, really, it’s to start a money laundering business. Langmore is also on the other side of the law.
