Where to Look for Karen Gillan: From ‘Doctor Who’ to ‘Dual’
Karen Gillan has been on our watch list for a while now. She’s not just an outstanding actress, but she also writes and directs. She’s been popping up on the blog a lot recently, as she’s busy as ever.
Let’s have a catch-up with Gillan with this roundup of roles:
1. Doctor Who
Gillan won over the Whoniverse portraying Amy Pond in the fan favorite Doctor Who. Pond and her husband Rory (Athur Darvill) are both companions to the Doctor (Matt Smith), traveling the universe in the TARDIS fighting off monsters and aliens. She starred in the titular role from 2010 through 2013.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
And how does one follow DW? She made her way to Marvel, starring as Nebula in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Nebula starts off as a baddie, the daughter of a war lord, but then switches gears. She joins forces with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his team of rebels in protecting the universe.
3. Selfie
In the 2014 TV series Selfie, Gillan stars as a twenty-something who falls into the trap of social media. When an embarrassing video goes viral, she turns to a marketing expert (John Cho) to help save her from herself, and at the same time, he helps her go from being vapid to having values.
4. The Circle
In 2017, she teamed up with Emma Watson for the Sci-Fi thriller The Circle. Watson portrays a young woman who gets a new job at a tech company. Gillan takes on the role of Annie, a colleague and friend to Watson’s character... at least in the beginning. With this being a thriller, things take a turn.
5. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
We saw Gillan in 2017’s Jumanji reboot. When a group of high schoolers are in detention, they’re sent to clean out the basement and come across a video game. They take a break to play and are transported into the game itself. We see Gillan as an avatar in the game, who isn’t so happy with her outfit.
6. Gunpowder Milkshake
You can look for Gillan in the 2020 action flick Gunpowder Milkshake. Her character is on the run and needs some help. She and Lena Headey star as a mother-daughter assassin team. The two have been estranged for a while now, but reunite to overthrow a crime syndicate they used to work for.
7. The Party’s Just Beginning
Gillan wrote and directed 2018’s The Party’s Just Beginning, which she also stars in. The story is set in her native Scotland. Gillan stars as a young woman whose friend just killed himself. Gillan tackled the sensitive topic to address the high suicide rates in the area she grew up in.
8. The Bubble
Just this year, Gillan completed the Judd Apatow movie The Bubble. The story revolves around a group of actors and crew filming a movie during quarantine. Her character skipped the last installment of the franchise, and her co-stars aren’t very happy with her. Even so, she’s back and ready to work.
9. Dual
In her next film, we can look for two Gillans. The premise of this Sci-Fi story starts off grim. Gillan’s character is dying. As a last-ditch effort, she turns to an organization that makes clones. But, when she finds out she's going to survive her illness, she goes head-to-head with this new version of herself.
Who's up for a Karen Gillan marathon right about now!?
