Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has been popping up a lot these days. It was first announced that he might be starring in Fantastic Beasts 3, and then he undid that announcement by saying it was only a rumor, and now... it's officially official.
All that back and forth can leave a person's head spinning. But, with the casting finally confirmed, we took a moment to look into his interesting onscreen background.
Let's see where else we can find Mads' performances:
1. Unit 1 (2000-2004)
One of Mikkelsen's first major roles was in the Danish action crime series Unit 1 (the original title is Rejseholdet). He takes on the role of Allan Fischer, who is part of a mobile task force that helps the local police solve crimes.
2. Julie (2005)

He also starred in the family dramedy Julie, another Danish import. He plays a young dad with an expecting wife (Iben Hjejle), and the two have a tween daughter (Julie Wright) to parent all the while. The series consists of five episodes.
3. Casino Royale (2006)
Mikkelsen made his international breakthrough starring in the James Bond action-thriller Casino Royale. This was Daniel Craig's first time portraying 007, with Mikkelsen taking on the role of the main baddie, Le Chiffre. He's a banker who uses his abilities and access to finance terrorist organizations.
4. Clash of the Titans (2010)
From Bond, Mikkelsen headed to ancient Greece, joining the cast of the action flick Clash of the Titans as Draco. The story revolves around Perseus (Sam Worthington), the son of Zeus, as he battles the underworld in an attempt to save heaven and Earth. Draco joins Perseus in his efforts.
5. The Three Musketeers (2011)
We also saw Mikkelsen in The Three Musketeers, opposite Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson. Mikkelsen takes on the role of Rochefort, who is a disgraced former member of the King's guard. He was ousted for setting up a fellow Musketeer.
6. The Hunt (2012)
In 2012, Mikkelsen returned to his homeland of Denmark to film The Hunt (the original title is Jagten). He takes on the role of a teacher who is accused by a kindergartener of doing something "indecent." As a viewer, we're told it's a lie and that he is in fact innocent. And it's up to him to prove that to his community.
7. Hannibal (2013-2015)
Mikkelsen took on one of his most memorable roles as renowned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter in the TV series Hannibal. We meet the respected doctor in his early days, prior to becoming a renowned serial killer. In the series, Lecter works with an FBI agent (Hugh Dancy), who is troubled by his affinity for serial killers.
8. Doctor Strange (2016)
We also saw Mikkelsen in the Marvel movie Doctor Strange, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Strange is a surgeon who loses his ability to operate, but from there, while searching for answers, develops superhero abilities. We wouldn't need superheroes if we didn't have supervillains, and that's where Mikkelsen steps in as the sorcerer Kaecilius.
9. Another Round (2020)
And, if you're looking for something new, Mikkelsen stars in the Danish-Swedish drama Another Round, releasing today (December 4). The movie revolves around four high school teachers, who are also friends, and decide to stay in a permanent state of drunkenness. They only drink during work hours, never after 8pm or on the weekends, and keep their blood alcohol level at 0.05%.
10. The Billion Dollar Spy (2021)
And, finally, Mikkelsen is set to star in the biopic The Billion Dollar Spy, opposite Armie Hammer. Hammer will take on the role of CIA agent Brad Reid, who befriends a Soviet engineer (Mikkelsen) during the Cold War. Reid is warned by his supervisors that his colleague may be a KGB "dangle," that he's pretending to want to defect, but really... it's a trap.
Is that enough Mads Mikkelsen in one place for you!?
