Where to Look for Saoirse Ronan: From Medical TV Series 'The Clinic' to the Sci-Fi Thriller 'Foe'

Saoirse Ronan began acting as a young child and has been racking up the roles ever since. She's probably best-known for her feature film debut in 2007's Atonement and her more recent ventures in coming-of-age movies like 2015's Brooklyn and 2017's Lady Bird.

We can look for her in the forthcoming sci-fi thriller Foe, where she plays a young wife whose husband is sent into space, leaving her with a replica of him (ack!).

While the latter is still in the works, let's take a look back at some of our favorite projects that she's already completed:

1. The Clinic

You probably thought we'd start this list with Atonement, but Ronan's first on-screen role was actually in the medical series The Clinic (2003-2007) at the wee age of nine. The series is based in Dublin, Ireland, revolving around a group of doctors and nurses, their roles at a clinic and at home. Ronan stars in four episodes as Rhiannon Geraghty. She joined her dad, Paul Ronan, who was the one to spot his daughter's talent.

2. Atonement

Ronan made her film debut with 2007's heartbreaking Atonement. She plays a 13-year-old girl who, out of spite, makes a startling allegation that ruins the lives of those involved. Set in 1935 England, continuing on through WWII and post-war, we watch how her lie triggers a series of events, spiraling out of control. Ronan's character works to redeem the mistake she made as a child.

3. The Lovely Bones

In 2009, the novel The Lovely Bones was adapted for the big screen, with Ronan taking the lead as Susie Salmon. When Salmon's character is abducted and murdered, her soul is stuck in limbo. She watches over her family, who are suffering, and her killer, who is getting away with murder. Salmon is at a cross roads, as she debates trying to expose her abductor or to help her family move on in peace.

4. Hanna

In 2011, Ronan switched gears, stepping into the action genre for Hanna. She plays a 16-year-old girl, who has been training to be an assassin since she was just a toddler. In the action flick, she's sent on a mission to track a baddie CIA agent (Cate Blanchett), which turns into an adventure spanning Europe. Eric Bana portrays Hanna's father, who not only raised her but taught her how to fight and protect herself.

5. The Host

Foe isn't the first sci-fi flick for Ronan. In 2013, she starred in The Host, an adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's 2008 novel. The story revolves around an alien attack. The aliens deem humans too violent and not deserving of the planet Earth. They're able to enter a human's body and take over. This happens to Ronan's character, Melanie, but she fights to keep control of her body and conscious.

6. The Grand Budapest Hotel

In 2014, Ronan joined an ensemble cast for Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. As the title of the movie suggests, the story is set in a hotel, revolving around it's concierge (Ralph Fiennes) and a lobby boy (Tony Revolori). The lobby boy is now grown and tells the story of the shenanigans in the hotel, including a romantic encounter with a girl named Agatha (Ronan).

7. Brooklyn

We also saw Ronan in the 2015 romantic drama Brooklyn. She plays a young Irish woman, who sets out to the U.S. looking for employment. Finding herself in Brooklyn, NY, she also finds love, with a young Italian-American man (Emory Cohen). Alas, she still has ties to Ireland, and those heartstrings are being pulled on. She returns home for a visit, where she encounters a former love interest (Domnhall Gleeson).

8. Lady Bird

In 2017, Ronan starred in Greta Gerwig's directorial debut Lady Bird. She plays a 17-year-old American girl, living in California, who is on the verge of starting college. She has a lot of hope and a lot of ambition, but also has a mother (Laurie Metcalf), who wants her to stay close to home because of finances. Even so, Lady Bird applies to a college in NYC, and all the while goes about a typical life of a high school senior.

9. Little Women

Ronan and Gerwig reunited in 2019, for the film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. With Gerwig once again directing, Ronan took on the role of Jo March, the eldest of four daughters. Jo takes it upon herself to look out for the younger girls, but there comes a point where she must venture out to follow her dreams of becoming a writer. She then returns home, when she learns her younger sister Beth (Eliza Scanlen) is ill.

10. Ammonite

Ronan teamed-up with Kate Winslet for the first time in 2019's Ammonite. The story is set in 1840s England, with Winslet portraying real life scientist Mary Anning, who specializes in fossils. Anning takes a young woman (Ronan) into her care, who is suffering from melancholy. The two enjoy their time together by the sea, developing a relationship that goes beyond friendship.

Shall we have a Saoirse Ronan marathon? Which project would you like to start with!?
