Winter Movie Preview: 10 Forthcoming Flicks to Look Forward To

We’re not just heading into the holiday season, but we’re heading into the new movies season. With lockdown lifting, so are restrictions, and some people may be slowly but surely making their way to the cinema.
If going to the movies is an activity you’ve been missing, this roundup may be that extra push to go on a bit of an adventure (or wait for releases to be available On Demand, depending on what you’re comfortable with):
1. The Lost Daughter

Technically, winter begins on December 21, but we're going to squeeze Olivia Colman's The Lost Daughter onto this list, which premieres in theaters on December 17 (via Netflix on December 31). Colman portrays a woman on an island holiday, who meets a young mother (Dakota Johnson). It seems she can see herself in her new acquaintance, but it's based on years long ago, causing her anguish.
2. The King’s Man

The Kingsman franchise kicked off in 2014, and the third installment is set to come out on December 22. But, don't expect to see original cast members Colin Firth and Taron Egerton, as this story takes us back to the beginning, when the Kingsman Agency was first formed. Even so, we can look for familiar faces like Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton
3. Sherlock Holmes 3

Another Sherlock movie starring Robert Downey Jr.? It's in the works, but the premiere date is a hard maybe. Both a trailer and synopsis have yet to be released. But, we can look for Jude Law to return as Dr. Watson and Jared Harris reprising his role as James Moriarty. The movie is scheduled to come out on December 22, but the timing is still a mystery.
4. Sing 2

The 2016 animated film Sing revolves around a mountain gorilla named Johnny, voiced by Taron Egerton. We can look for the return of Johnny and pals on December 22, as they prepare for a new show. They work to get rock star Clay Calloway (Bono) to join them. If you're looking for a pick-me-up, this one might be it, as it's about dreaming big dreams in spite of the hard stuff.
5. The Tragedy of Macbeth

Shakespeare's work seems to be eternal when it comes to on-screen adaptations, with no end in sight. Here Denzel Washington steps in as the Scottish general, who is persuaded by three witches to believe he is the next king. His wife (Frances McDormand) is keen on this news, supporting her husband. You can look for this fresh take on December 25.
6. Memoria

Tilda Swinton stars in the art house picture Memoria, premiering on December 26. She takes on the role of a Scottish expatriate living in Columbia. She's really into nature, into art and into history. But, her serene lifestyle is soon upended. When hearing an unexplainable boom in the night, it not only startles her but ignites a need to figure out the source.
7. The 355

The spy game is getting a new movie, with The 355 coming out on January 7. Jessica Chastain takes the lead, heading up a team of female spies from around the world. The women join forces to stop what could be a possible WWIII. You can also look for Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Penélope Cruz and Fan Bingbing.
8. Morbius

Marvel is adding to its ever-growing movie adaptations, with Morbius premiering on January 20. Jared Leto takes on the title role, starring as a “living vampire.” He portrays scientist Michael Morbius, who in attempt to cure his rare blood disease, instead develops vampirism. We can also look for Anglo favorite Matt Smith, who portrays Loxias Crown. He has the same blood disease as Morbius.
9. Death on the Nile

Writer-director Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile hits theaters on February 11. Branagh also appears in the movie, starring as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. In the latest Agatha Christie adaptation, Poirot is on holiday, but when there’s a murder, it’s cut short. Poirot is compelled to investigate.
10. The Outfit

Mark Rylance stars as a skilled tailor in The Outfit, which you can look for on February 22. Set in 1920s Chicago, he finds himself working on behalf of criminals, the only people who can afford his fine suits. It’s one thing to work for the mafia, but it’s another thing to be held hostage by them, which is what happens as the story rolls out.
